ENDODONTICS FOR THE GP

J. Craig Baumgartner, DDS, PhD

OHSU Faculty

After decades with few significant changes in root canal therapy, numerous innovations have recently been developed that make endodontics easier and more "FUN" than it ever has been.  These innovative techniques along with an increased understanding of biologic response allow endodontic treatment to be more efficiently delivered with increased clinical success.  However, practitioners should be aware of gimmicks and gadgets that do not perform effectively or do not address the biologic basis for treatment.  With patients' increased desire to save their teeth, endodontic procedures are in greater demand.  The fast paced, fact filled presentations, and hands-on labs will provide a level of familiarization and experience that allows clinicians to decide which innovations should be integrated into their practices.

Course Objectives:  At the conclusion of these meetings, attendees will have learned:

  • Numerous helpful methods for making accurate pulpal and periapical diagnoses
  • Methods for the diagnosis and management of the "cracked tooth syndrome"
  • The latest methods for profound anesthesia including intraosseous techniques
  • The advantages of using multi-frequency electronic apex locators
  • Innovative methods for chemo-mechanical cleaning and shaping of root canals using the latest NiTi instruments (sonics, ultrasonics, rotary instruments)
  • Innovative methods for filling root canal systems in 3-D including the System B and Obtura II
  • Techniques for revision of previously filled canals and perforation repair (MTA)
  • Effective management of endodontic infections, including drainage from soft and hard tissues
  • A hierarchy of analgesics and antibiotics for endodontic patients
