A Mini-Residency in parenteral conscious sedation with Dr. Ken Reed. Upon satisfactory completion of this mini-residency, the examination for a permit to administer parenteral conscious sedation by the Oregon Board of Dentistry may be taken. This residency meets all guidelines set forth by the OBD and most other states as well. The format is both didactic and clinical. Training will be included in basic conscious sedation, including administration of parenteral sedative medications to a minimum of 20 patients; physical evaluation; management of medical emergencies; monitoring and the use of monitoring equipment. A required session on Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is included. Pharmacology of utilized agents will be discussed as well as recommendations for choosing one particular drug over another in a given situation. Various IV fluids, venipuncture techniques, etc. will be appropriately addressed. This is NOT a residency in general anesthesia, you will not be trained to ‘put people to sleep’. Prerequisites: A valid license to practice dentistry A current permit to prescribe and administer controlled substances issued by the DEA A current CPR Level C card (BLS) Appropriate professional malpractice insurance. Plan on bringing at least one dental assistant for the entirety of the clinic sessions. Without an assistant, you cannot possibly complete the 20 or more cases we have scheduled for you in the time frame we have available. If you are able to bring two assistants, that would be even better. Also, you are encouraged to bring your assistants for any or all of the didactic sessions. They will benefit from this information. There is no tuition charged for your assistants so feel free to bring as many as you are able.. In this course you will see at least 20 patients and you will do everything involved in each procedure. That means you will start the IV on each of your cases. You will titrate drug to effect for each patient. Then you will do dentistry for each patient. Most IV sedation courses today have you work in groups of three with one doctor doing each step above and all three counting it toward their 20 cases. Our faculty will not allow that in this course. Each of you will treat at least 20 patients. You will be completely prepared to go back to your office and sedate and treat patients. This course is very well organized due primarily to the excellent quality of faculty and staff we have been able to secure. For more information on each of the faculty involved in this course, see:<http://www.learnivsedation.com/Faculty.html> These are long days ! But they're probably the most fun you'll have in dentistry and it is a 'good tired' that you'll feel each day.
