Course Overview:

This certifying course includes lectures and clinical training by the renowned Drs. Kenneth Reed, Amanda Okundaye, Andrea Fonner, Stanley Malamed and Jason Brady. After completing this comprehensive course, participants will feel confident administering parenteral moderate sedation to their patients. Didactic topics are outlined in detail below. At the final didactic session participants will practice managing medical emergencies on a high fidelity human simulator (Sim-Man®), which will provide them with valuable hands on experience.

During the clinical portion of the course, participants will start IVs and administer sedative agents while performing clinical dentistry. Unlike other programs, this course will prepare participants for real-life practice by having them simultaneously perform both the sedation and dentistry on a minimum of twenty patients. We allow participants to choose procedures with which they are most comfortable and we supply the appropriate, pre-screened patients and we provide post-operative coverage.

This course is valuable for dentists who would like to obtain a moderate sedation permit and also those who need additional training to meet current standards. The course meets ADA’s Guidelines for Teaching Pain Control and Sedation to Dentists and Dental Students.

Each participant is required to bring two dental assistants during clinic sessions, one will assist with the dental procedure and the other is dedicated to monitoring the patient.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the appropriate patient to receive parenteral moderate sedation
  • Explain the pharmacology of the benzodiazepines, opioids and reversal agents
  • Describe venipuncture technique
  • Outline a plan for the prevention, recognition and treatment of medical emergencies that may occur with sedation

Prerequisites(must be in place in order to participate in course):

  • A valid dental license and approval by the Washington State Dental Quality Assurance Commission to practice in Washington State (OAGD will assist with the process)
  • A current DEA permit allowing the subscription of Schedules II/IIN through V
  • A current BLS card (health care provider level) card
  • A current advanced Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
  • Proof of appropriate professional malpractice insurance that specifically covers participants while treating patients
  • Two dental assistants for the clinic session
  • Each participant is required to bring a precordial stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, pulse oximeter, electrocardiograph and end tidal CO2 monitor to the clinical session
