Course Overview:

Lecture Portion:

This presentation will separate the facts from the fantasies around temporomandibular disorders (TMD). In the past, dentists have attempted to manage their TMD patients utilizing standard dental approaches, which have not always proven to be successful. In fact, our profession has many concepts and theories that attempt to solve musculoskeletal problems with dental therapies, many of which have little to no scientific basis. This presentation will describe the present evidence that either support or disprove these concepts, including how occlusion may or may not affect TMD. Other areas that will be discussed are etiologic considerations and treatment strategies, including the use of occlusal appliances.

Hands On Portion:

This hands-on course will help you increase successful outcomes with TMD patients by teaching the fundamentals of TMD diagnosis. The session will include interacting with Dr. Okeson and colleagues as a full evaluation is conducted on a live patient. A final diagnosis and treatment options will be presented.   Participants will also bring in TMD/orofacial pain cases to discuss diagnosis and treatment considerations.  Upon completion, you’ll see that if you begin treatment with a differential diagnosis, your treatment options will be clear.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn how to discern which pain disorders will respond to therapy and which will not
  • Understand the relationship between occlusion, bruxism and temporomandibular disorders
  • Identify the most favorable orthopedically stable relationship between the occlusion and condylar position for restorative dentistry
  • Determine when occlusal changes are indicated for the management of TMD
  • Recognize the appropriate use of occlusal appliance therapy for muscle and joint pain
  • Determine what you do next when an occlusal appliance reduces the patient’s TMD symptoms
  • Learn step by step TMD/Orofacial pain patient evaluation
  • Understand how to dinstinguish a 'muscle-only pain' patient from a 'joint pain' patient
  • Know treatment options for muscle and joint pain patients based on diagnosis
  • Confidently refer when you ascertain that your patient's TMD/Orofacial pain is neither muscle or joint pain
