Course Overview:

Session I

In this entertaining and informative presentation, Dr. Huffines will share solutions to common everyday problems that arise when treating older and medically complex adults. According to ADA, 30% of the income in the typical general practice comes from treating seniors. This patient base is expected to double to over 79 million in the next few years. The entire dental team must be trained to meet the unique needs of seniors as cases can be more challenging due to the complex array of medical and dental conditions that are common in older generations. Considerations include medication use for a variety of problems such as xerostomia, visual and/or hearing impairments and medical conditions such as stroke, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's. Caries is the primary cause of tooth loss as we age and millions of seniors are partially or totally edentulous, so there is a tremendous need for esthetic and functional conventional and implant supported prostheses.

Course Objectives:

·       Understand the implications of biologic aging on restorative and preventive dentistry

·       Discover the latest recommendations for bisphosphonates and antibiotic premedication and complex medication regimens

·       Evaluate current anti-caries chemotherapeutics including ACP, CCP-ACP, and CCP-ACFP

·       Understand the impact of residual ridge resorption on removable prosthetic design

Session II

This interactive session will build your confidence and skill needed to successfully treat medically complex and special needs adults in your practice. Treating older, medically complex patients or those with special needs requires treatment modifications to ensure success and efficiency. In this hands-on session, techniques for restoring caries will be practiced. Using participant presentations and scenarios, participants will use practical resources to simplify the decision-making process for complex patients.

Objectives:

·         Select restorative materials for root caries

·         Properly use cervical matrices and the passive wedge technique

·         Adapt the principles of the heterogeneity of aging and life span to treatment planning

·         Prevent pitfalls when seeking medical consultation
